10 myths and the #1 thing you need to know to succeed in your coaching business

There are so many myths about what it takes to succeed as a coach or healer. (Or any other business for that matter!) Because you may buy into all these myths, building your business becomes so much more difficult than it needs to be.

But really, it can be very simple, as long as you get only one thing straight. Want to know what it is? Keep reading.

There are many “rules” for how things are done or should be done, but many of the people who break those “rules” take it to the very top. Let’s just take an example of Bill Gates or Steve Jobs. They didn’t follow the “rule” or myth that you need to complete college to succeed in business. Why? Because the “rules” are often just limiting beliefs. I think we could agree that both of these guys did pretty well for themselves, yes?

So let’s take a look at some of the myths that may slow you down in growing your business so you can make the income you want sooner rather than later. I am hereby giving you permission to break these rules, and I will show you the number one thing to focus on that will make the rest of your business work.

You need to know all the steps to building your business before you begin. This is a huge blind spot that keeps so many people stuck in indecision and procrastination. You don’t have to know it all, you truly only need to have a vision and know the first step. Once you take that first step, the next, and the next and the next will be revealed to you as you take action on each step. You don’t need to know all the steps until you have committed to doing it and even then, all you need to know is the next step. The Universe is likely not going to reveal all the steps to you until you have made the decision to proceed and sees that you are serious about taking action on the first one. What have you been holding off on doing because you feel like you need to know everything before you begin?

You need to wait until you make more income in your business before you invest. In my opinion this is very poor advice. The time to invest is always when you are NOT making the money you want or your business is not going well. Just like you need to advertise more in bad times than good, the time to invest in your business is when you’re stuck and don’t know how to bring in the money. The investment you make could help you overcome this one piece forever. However, if you wait, you may run out of resources, still struggling in the dark saying: “When I get x more clients or I make x more dollars I’ll be ready to invest.” This is where you need to have trust in yourself and in the Universe. A failure to want to invest in your business is likely due to fears and limiting beliefs around money – which also will hold you back considerably in your business unless you change those beliefs.

You need a fancy website before you can begin and without it you won’t make any money. This too, is such a huge misconception. Even if you have an online business, this is not true. For so many years I had a really bad website, but it didn’t stop people from signing up to work with me. You could put up one quick opt-in page to get started collecting leads and this could literally be your website for a while, or even forever, depending on how you do business. Don’t let not having your website finished or even started prevent you from starting to make money. This is not to say that a great website isn’t valuable. It is, but first things first. Make sure you read to the bottom of this article so you understand what I’m trying to say here.

You need a large email list to make money. This too, is not necessarily true. I know many people, myself included who have been able to bring in a good amount of money from a smaller size list. However, in order for this to happen, you want to make sure you align your programs and offerings to the fact that you want to make more money from a smaller list. If you’re trying to sell a $37 product online through your list, then yes you need a bigger list before you’ll make any real money, because of the way conversions work online. However, if you sell a program starting at let’s say $3000 and up, you won’t need to sell to as many people and you can make good money from a smaller list. Does that mean you shouldn’t focusing on growing your list or that you shouldn’t sell lower priced items? No, not necessarily, it just means that having a small list or no list at all should not stop you from making money now. Don’t use it as a crutch because it will become one.

You need to first sell people into a lower end program or product before you can sell them into a larger, more higher priced program. This is not true. I sell high end programs to people everyday that I have never had a conversation with before and my clients do too. What you need is a good strategy, the right mindset and you need to make sure you are in alignment with what you’re selling. Anything is possible. If selling a $49 dollar program or product inspires you, by all means do that, but if you’re just starting out and you want to make more money faster, I wouldn’t recommend going that route, as doing this requires a larger community to sell to – and let’s face it, at $49 a pop, you need to make quite a few of those sales to support yourself – not even talk about supporting the lifestyle you really want. Building a large community usually takes longer time, but again, that doesn’t mean you can’t break that rule and do it fast if you have great strategies and are willing to invest.

You need a fancy copywriter to write all your content or a copy of someone else’s email templates. By all means, no disrespect to any copywriters, they do great work! In fact a great copywriter can do magic. However, if your business is an extension of you your message is usually conveyed best through your own authentic words. Your words carry energy and they will attract the right kinds of people into your business. If you’re not already successfully making the kind of money you want in your business, it’s likely you’re not fully aligned in your message. This may be because you’re not completely trusting yourself, you don’t think people will like the “real” you, or some other fear of stepping into who you really are and conveying that. Before hiring a copywriter, make sure you are comfortable in your own skin and know who you are and what you stand for, so you can convey this to the copywriter effectively and pick the right person for the job. And – by all means, don’t use other people’s done for you email templates. Something is working for someone else because it’s in alignment for them, but it’s not necessarily in alignment for you. Speak your own voice and it will take you a lot farther. Once you’re confident in your own voice and message and you’re making money in your business, it’s a lot easier to convey to a copywriter what you want. As you are first starting out, you will likely change your messaging several times before you feel completely aligned, and that’s just the normal progression that happens and there’s nothing wrong with that. Sure, you could invest in a copywriter off the bat, but just know that chances are your message will change several times before it is just right.

It takes a lot of time to build income in my business. This too is based on a limiting belief that doesn’t need to be true for you. Whatever you believe, you will create, so if you believe this, it will likely be your reality. When I got my mindset right I went from making $11,000 in an entire year to making $24,000 in just three days. My clients have had similar experiences of going from zero to $20,000 in a month.  You just need the right mindset and strategies and the fact that it takes a long time is another one of those limiting beliefs, which, if you believe them, will become your reality.

You just need to speak to a lot of people and the law of averages will work for you. Yes, the law of averages is real, however, if you’re incapable of closing or enrolling new clients because of who you’re being, speaking to more people isn’t going to solve the problem. Figuring out why you’re not able to enroll them and changing that, will. Until you’re confidently able to enroll people in your business, you are going to have a hard time, as clients are the life-blood of your business.

As long as you work hard, it will all work out. While it may be nice to think so, I don’t know how many people I’ve met who just worked hard and burnt themselves out without getting the results they wanted. Working hard doesn’t need to mean more money or success. The key is to find out why what you’re doing is not working and change that instead. (It’s likely a blind spot.) If you are working hard in your business, it’s likely because you believe you have to. However, this is another belief that you can change, and as you change it, your reality will change along with it.

So, what’s the one thing that will allow you to break pretty much any other “rule” out there and give you the freedom and income you desire in your business?

You probably guessed it already? The right answer is your consciousness which is your entire human energy field including your mindset. If you want to learn more about your subtle energies and how they affect you and your business, make sure to check out these articles as well:

Managing your subtle energies: The secret to manifesting your dreams and Why you fail to manifest what you want.

To simplify, let’s just call it mindset, knowing that when I say that I refer to your entire human energy field or conciusness.

If your mindset is off, then none of what you’re doing is going to work, no matter how fancy your website, no matter how many people you speak to, no matter how much you work, no matter how much you invest, no matter how much time you give yourself….

The magic that glues it all together is inside of you and once you get that right, everything else will be right and the results will start to come with much more ease. It’s all within you and it’s a matter of learning to use those capabilities the right way.

Your business is 90% mindset and 10% strategies. Just make sure those strategies are completely aligned, and combine that with the right mindset and you will become unstoppable.

Most people spend 90% of their time and energy on strategies, but if mindset is 90% of the work, wouldn’t it make more sense to invest more into your mindset?

Once your mindset is aligned and working effectively, all of the other strategies above will work out for you in your favor and become valuable tools in your business. They are all important tools. Think of the mindset as the electricity going into your business. Without power your business is dead, but you can turn on the power – with your mind – and all of the other pieces will work nicely for you as well.

I love the quote “think of mindset as the electricity that powers your business.” That’s very illuminating… no pun intended. 😉

I want to show you how to use your mind to manifest your wildest dreams and create your own heaven on earth while living life on purpose, and serving the people you are here to serve.

In my 20 years as a small business owner, one thing is crystal clear to me: What helps you thrive is not your not your intelligence, level of experience or skill-set, but the programming in your subconscious mind. You can be programmed for struggle and lack, or flow and abundance. In my work, I help you reprogram your mind for success and abundance so you can create a prosperous and fulfilling life living your life’s calling and doing the work you came here to do.
