The true meaning of hustle and why you need to stop it now

There is a myth in the entrepreneur community about needing to hustle to be successful. Everywhere I turn on social media I see well-meaning advice about hustling. Like it’s some sort of badge of honor to hustle.

Believe me, I was the queen of hustling. I know exactly what it looks like. I’ve been a business owner now for 20 years. Different businesses and different industries. I’ve seen and done it all and I used to be the master of hustling.

So why did I change? The biggest lesson I learned was when I collapsed on the floor in front of a client and spent years and tens of thousands of dollars to fix my health. That’s where the life of hustling takes you. Sure, you can sustain it for a while, but for all the young entrepreneurs out there carrying their badge of honor because they work so hard, I want to say this: You can multiply your results – by doing less. By slowing down. It doesn’t need to be so hard.

My wake up call from the life of hustle took me on a few years of detour. It was during these years of being sick that I studied and read hundreds of books about how the Universe works, and I used what I had learned to heal myself from illness when nothing else worked. If there is one lesson I learned from this, it is this: What goes on inside of you is far more powerful than what goes on outside of you, and your inner power can literally lift mountains for you if you know how to do it.

There is no need to hustle. When I started to understand my mindset and energy I quickly went from making $11,000 in an entire year in my business to making $24,000 in just three days – working less!

I speak with tired entrepreneurs all the time. Many are still young, but they are feeling burnt out! Some are getting heart palpitations, anxiety and many other health problems. And I can smell the symptoms from a mile away – because I’ve been there. Seen the signs and dealt with the years of cleaning up for my ignorance. For thinking I was invincible.

There’s nothing wrong with taking inspired action and of course your business doesn’t run itself, you do have to take action, but there is a difference between hustling and being productive.

I’m talking about the dangerous underlying subconscious belief that if you’re not hustling or working hard all the time, you’re failing. That if you don’t work like crazy you won’t have enough clients or money or that your business won’t grow as much and that you won’t reach your goals. That belief will get you run down, if not right now, eventually. And let me add one more thing, if you’ve ever been without your health, you learn one thing: Your health is everything. It’s not worth messing with. But besides health risks of this kind of lifestyle, there is another very important aspect I want to address.

Despite what you currently believe about hustling, let’s look at what it really means and what it does from an energetic perspective, because we live in an energetic Universe that responds to your energy.

I was talking with one of my wise dear friends recently and she had the best way of saying it. After all she studied neuroscience and is one of the smartest women I know.  She said you don’t have to buzz on the outside, you just need to buzz from the inside. And this is so true! When you raise your vibration, it’s almost like your body is buzzing. You can feel it inside. It’s a healthy, relaxed and vibrant kind of buzzing, not the artificial or anxious buzzing from caffeine, sugar or your body running high on adrenaline. That kind of fake buzzing will easily lead you straight to the path of burnout because it’s an addictive, fake high.

And – this is key. The adrenaline from hustling may give you a false impression that you’re in a high vibration, but often underneath lurks suppressed emotions and beliefs in your subconscious that is repelling the very thing you want. So you run around hustling and working hard while your body (which is a giant energy field) is repelling the very thing you’re working so hard for! Not very productive, do you think?

You see, the false high from your adrenaline may make it look like everything is okay on the surface.

For example, people who have unresolved and unhealed issues of the heart often become adrenaline junkies. And did you know that having unresolved issues in the heart are also huge blocks to manifesting what you want? Your heart is a giant magnet which draws to it what it is a match to. When there is pain or hurt in the heart that is unresolved, it can become huge blocks to manifesting the reality you want. This is just something to think about.

Could it be that many of the people who work so hard and hustle do so because they don’t think they are worthy of a life where they don’t need to struggle? So they work hard and become adrenaline junkies instead…? From my own experience coaching hundreds of people, this much I can say: The biggest achievers are often those with the most hurt underneath the surface. It may seem like they have it all together from the outside but feelings of not being worthy and not being good enough (on the conscious or subconscious level) often drive them to exhaustion to prove their worth. This was also the case in my own life. And because they often have these blocks in the heart, they are actually having to work extra hard, in order to compensate from their inability to draw things they want to them energetically.

Now, don’t get me wrong here, there is a distinction between hustling and taking inspired action. There is nothing wrong with taking inspired action, in fact, it’s a very important part of manifesting your dreams.

However, a quick Google search gave me the following definition of hustle: Force (someone) to move hurriedly or unceremoniously in a specified direction. (That almost sounds like manipulation if you ask me!)

Let’s look at the word force first. When you try to force something to happen you are working against the flow of the Universe. From an energetic perspective, when you force something you are actually pushing what you want away from you. You are not an energetic match to receiving the thing you are forcing because actually what you’re doing is pushing what you want away from you. (If you understand what I’m saying here I hope part of you right now is waking up going, hmmm, wow, that’s kind of crazy! Because it REALLY is!)

Force is like resistance. What you resist persists. So when you work with force your energy is saying: Go away from me that which I want! (Are you starting to get why you may need to reconsider hustling now?)

Now, let’s look at the word “hurriedly”. If you know anything about manifesting and energies, (maybe you don’t and that’s why I’m sharing here, so don’t worry) hurry comes from an energy of fear, and energies of fear will attract more reasons to be fearful. Hurry is not good for manifesting what you want. Now, hear me here: I’m not saying go slow, I’m saying don’t hurry. When you hurry you’re not fully present, you are rushing. This is not a productive energy to be in when you are manifesting. Doing yes, hurry, no.

Let’s look at the third word in this definition: Unceremoniously. Ouch, that sounds pretty unconcious to me! A quick look at the word unceremoniously on Google gave me the following description: Without ceremony, abrupt, rude, undignified.

So what hustle really means from an energetic perspective is this: Force things to hurry away from you in a rude, unceremonious way!

Given that we live in an energetic universe that responds to your energy, trust me when I say this: This is not the kind of energy you want to be in when you are manifesting your dreams.

Maybe the word hustle got a whole new meaning to you?

I know this may go against so much of what you’ve heard other people talk about but it’s certainly something for you to think about.

Hustling is an outdated way of doing business. When my clients focus on being the right person, their clients show up at their doorstep with little to no effort. Programs fill up while they are off doing other things. And yes you need a strategy, and yes you need to market yourself and take inspired action, but you don’t need to hustle. In fact, I suggest you don’t.

A strategy is only as good as the intentions and energy behind it, because we live in a Universe that is created from consciousness and who you are being in that consciousness, is going to determine what you get. If you hustle, (we have already defined what that means here) it’s like you’re swimming up the river.

It’s time to turn around my friend and let the river carry you towards your desired destination. It will get you where you want to go so much faster and with less struggle and force!

Want some help getting out of the hustle and into the flow? I invite you to schedule a complimentary call with me here. We will get to the bottom of what’s holding you back so you can change it and manifest your deepest desires.

I’m allllll about getting into that flow. For years I thought it meant I was lazy or something! But the truth was I always saw better results (even aside from how much better I felt!) when I flowed instead of hustled. I think about it truly as “flowing downstream” instead of kicking my way upstream. Your words resonated this with me in a new way. I especially loved the definition of hustle you shared…makes it much less a badge of honor and more about unnecessary exertion.

I agree with you 100% but something stopped me which is having a hurt in the heart can hold you back. I am hurt from my parents because they think what i want is going after worldly things and forgetting God (they are orthodox christians) and i grew up with them as my only friends so when they don’t support me, i lose confidence in myself. Now I’m working on loving myself and building that intimate relationship with myself but I’m not sure if i should work on clearing this conflict with them to move forward or not? Do i need to?

    • Vibeke on February 19, 2018 at 11:00 pm

Dear Yostina, if you feel there is still hurt in your heart, I would suggest you work on healing that as that hurt is likely to hold you back. As I don’t know the details about the relationship between you and your parents, it’s hard for me to give you any kind of solid advice. Keep up the work on loving yourself, and through that work, unloving relationships will start to fall away as you notice they don’t serve you anymore. Make sure you stand up for what’s right for you and trust your intuition and guidance. If you need more help, feel free to reach out to me directly.

Great article! Every time I read one of your blog posts, it’s like you’re looking into my mind and reading my thoughts! You and I must be on the same wave lengths or something lol.

In my younger days I was all about the hustle, and that habit is something I am mindfully putting aside for all the energy reasons you spoke of. It is a habit though, and with that it does take some strong mindfulness to break… especially because it was the “norm” for so long that “doing less but with Higher Intention” sometimes feels like “not doing enough.” But that too is just part of the process of “breaking addictions.” And that’s where being strong in mindfulness helps.

Thank you for this article. As always it is a Sign reassuring me that I am hearing the Guidance being given to me.

Danielle, you bring up some great points. Hustle is surely a habit to break and I agree it can be a bit of an addiction (workaholic). I am glad you resonate with my blogs 🙂
