Avoid this marketing mistake that will keep you broke

I was reading in a Facebook Group for conscious entrepreneurs recently and a question popped up about how traditional or woo-woo you should be in your marketing and what works best.

There were a lot of opinions about this and people were debating back and forth. Most people leaning towards being “safe” and be more traditional because you could throw people off by seeming too woo-woo.

A lot of them were more worried about how people perceived them than being real and authentic in their marketing messages. They were afraid that if they showed they were spiritual they would be seen as woo-woo.

You may want to be perceived a certain way, I get it. But why would you want to be seen differently from what you are?

One reason you would want to be seen differently might be because deep down you don’t feel good enough as you are. You may think you have flaws (who doesn’t!?) and that if people find out who you really are, they won’t like you for who you are.

I used to believe this too when I first started my business.  I paid big money to mentors and coaches who told me to dim down my woo-woo. But it wasn’t until I embraced my woo-woo that my business really took off.

I see this limiting belief all the time when working with clients and entrepreneurs who are in the earlier stages of their business or if they are changing their business. They believe that people won’t like them for their flaws and imperfections, for speaking their bold truth or being too woo-woo.

But in reality that’s not true. People actually love you more for sharing the real you. In fact, the more YOU you are in your marketing, the more aligned your marketing is, the more your marketing will work and the more you will draw the right people to you who are ready to open their wallets and pay you to work with you.

Done for your email templates and cookie cutter marketing will not work for the more conscious entrepreneur. It’s simply not aligned and alignment is key for your marketing to work and be effective.

In addition, holding back on who you are means holding back your truth, which can be both depressing and debilitating.

Now, of course, there are things that belong in business and things that don’t. Just because you’re authentic and real doesn’t mean that everyone gets to know everything about you. Just like you wouldn’t share things about your sex life with your grocery store clerk, not everything is everyone’s business.

You get to decide what’s appropriate to share in your marketing depending on your business. If you’re a sex and intimacy coach, maybe you do want to share about your sex life, because that actually might speak to your ideal clients. If you have experiences in your life that ties directly into your business, it may be appropriate to share in your marketing.

If you are a healer or a coach, a lot of what you help people with are things you’ve gone through yourself and overcome. Why not leverage this experience in your marketing and share about it?

I’ve learned that the best way to attract your soul-mate clients is to be true to yourself and who you are in your marketing message and trust more in your own intuition and gut feeling instead of trying to follow some sort of cookie-cutter strategy or marketing template.

When you are just being yourself you will repel the people who don’t resonate with you, and attract those who truly resonate with you who will become your most ideal, raving clients.

When you try to appeal to everyone, you will connect with no-one.

Wouldn’t you rather know that people are a great fit before you start working with them rather than having issues after you start working with them?

More and more, people want to know why you do what you do. What do you believe about the world? Why are you in this business?

If you’re a conscious entrepreneur, your business may be a vehicle for your purpose here on earth. What makes you so passionate about the work you do? Why is what you do important? If you had one message you could share with the entire world, what would it be?

How exhausting to try to be something you’re not or hold back on your truth! It drains your energy as you’re living in a constant state of resistance. Usually when people do this, it’s because they have childhood wounds that need to be healed.

You may not have been accepted as your authentic self growing up and you may have subconsciously taken on a role of being someone you’re not in order to feel loved. Maybe it wasn’t okay for you to speak your truth or maybe you were told to be quiet and you felt that what you said wasn’t important, so you decided to stay quiet?

I’ve found that whenever you’re not being authentic to who you really are, life doesn’t work. And whenever you’re not being authentic, it’s because there are wounds underneath that need healing. You feel it’s not safe to be the real you.

Most people in the world have been so programmed to think, believe and act in certain ways they don’t even remember who they really are underneath it all.

Well-meaning people may have told you what you could and couldn’t do, what you should or shouldn’t do, how you should or shouldn’t live your life, what’s okay to do and what’s not okay, what’s appropriate and what’s not, who you are allowed to be and who you are not allowed to be.

The key is to peel back all of the layers and all of the programming and find your way back to your real authentic self. The one you were before you took on all of those roles and all the programming. That is the REAL you. The programming is not.

Your ideal clients want to connect with you. They want to see the real you, not some sort of made up, wrapped-into-a -box-with-a bow-on-top version of who you are.

Vulnerability creates real connections and your flaws make you beautiful.

If you’re not embracing what makes you unique, you’re likely to end up with marketing that feels like vanilla. It’s not that special and people don’t really care. It doesn’t give room to show how and why you are different and unique and it certainly will not let you stand out as the unique and brilliant person you really are.

Remember that you were created unique, and nobody is just like you. Your gifts are unique, so why not let your marketing be as well?

I use to say that playing it safe actually means playing it risky because you risk not connecting with your ideal clients at all and that translates to not enrolling new clients and customers.
