In this article I am going to share with 5 of the biggest lessons I learned through the different businesses I’ve built.  I’m going to make this short and to the point and I hope you find the the insights I share valuable and that you can learn from my lessons.

1)  If you have a great product/service and you are unique, people will buy and price is not an issue. This is a lesson I first learned when my sister and I started a business when I was 14. We created “designer” shorts from scratch and sold them to people at school. My sister painted on the fabric, each pair unique, and I helped sew the shorts together. Within a short amount of time we had a lot of demand and had to hire more people to help  keep up the demand. Because the shorts became a fashion statement, nobody ever questioned the price.

Lesson: Find a way to be unique and stand out.

2) Have faith that everything will work out. When my husband and I started our business right after college, we were young, naive and had little business experience. There were many reasons why we wouldn’t make it, and we struggled in the beginning. We spent more money than we had and to put the business rent on a personal credit card when we started to run out of money. But we had faith and it paid off. 9 months after we started, our business had an average weekly revenue of $35,000, way above our wildest dreams.

Lesson: You don’t always know how things will work out, but if you have faith and keep doing the work, amazing things will happen.

3) All the money in the world is not worth it if you feel trapped and you don’t live the life you want. Remember that business I mentioned above. Well, I left it. Not because the money wasn’t awesome, but because the business was ruining our relationship, we had no free time and we were working non stop.

Lesson: Your business is supposed to support you in living the life you want, not drain you and stop you from living your life.

4) If you don’t love what you do, it’s not sustainable. I had a multiple six-figure small business consulting business that I had for several years. Although I was great at what I did and my clients loved my work, there was something missing. I didn’t feel fulfilled and I knew there was something else I was supposed to do with my life. I felt like I was living someone else’s life.

At the height of my business, I decided I couldn’t go on any longer. Lack of passion drove me to give up a highly profitable business.

Lesson: If you don’t love it, don’t build it, it won’t last.

5) You can do what you love, make great money and have freedom on your terms. It is possible to have exactly what you want. You just need to be really clear on what you want, allow yourself to dream, have faith that you can do it and get the support and the tools necessary for you to get there. You also need to be willing to break some of your old rules, work on your mindset and let go of the things in your life that are holding you back.

Lesson: Don’t settle for anything less than what you really want.
