Where do you stop in pursuit of your dreams?
As we’re just starting the New Year I wanted to write a blog post about one thing that will either help you achieve your dreams, or stop you in your tracks.
I know many of you have reflected and set big goals for both your business and personal life in the New Year. But just as new years’ resolutions often fade by the end of February, if you are not truly committed to your intentions, your goals are nothing more than daydreams.
Commitment is what makes you go that extra mile, even though you are getting discouraged or you’re falling on your face. It’s what keeps your eyes on your dreams and make you stand back up after you fall. We all fall from time to time. It’s human. But, while some stand back up others stay down.
The difference between people who succeed and those who give up on their dreams is often just a difference in attitude. People who succeed will keep on going when times get tough and don’t let fear or other distractions stop them. They refuse to let temporary defeat hold them back from getting what they want.
I believe there is no such thing as real failure, there’s only temporary defeat. If you keep moving towards what you want and focus on it, eventually you will get it. It may not be within the timeframe you expected, but it will come, eventually, if you keep moving forward and don’t give up.
Recently, I had the pleasure of listening to a speech from Bo Eason, an ex-pro football player. When he was 9 years old he decided he wanted to be a pro football player. He asked his dad to get him up every morning at 5 am to practice before school, and he would have people lined up to throw him 1000 balls every day for many years.
Despite several knee surgeries and nobody wanting him in college, he didn’t give up and wouldn’t take no for an answer. He kept his eyes on his dreams and eventually made it pro.
Sometimes we forget what’s behind someone else’s success. I think his story illustrates that people who succeed don’t have any less defeat, but they just keep moving forward.
Sometimes it’s so easy to find a reason why you can’t. Your inner chatter might tell you “who do you think you are?”, “what makes you think you can do this?” Or, “I’m not good enough to do this.” And you let yourself slip back into safety and comfort – a place that won’t lead you to what you truly want.
I believe you can have, be or do anything you want in life. But only if you are truly committed to do what you need to do and be who you need to be.
What are you willing to do to reach your goals? Where would you stop or what would stop you from realizing it?
What will you tell yourself when times get tough? Because at some point, you’re going to get the thought in your head that giving up is a lot easier than to keep going. But if you do, you’re simply back to where you started.
What will you do differently this time to keep moving forward where you have previously stopped yourself? What do you have at stake?
